*Xcorps TV Production Tip #10. – For eXotic Locations Use WIDE Angle Lenses – Please DO IT!
The Xcorps Action Sports TV series is shot mainly OUTDOORS which is natural for Action Sports. Generally speaking shooting ‘ON Location’ is a LOT EASIER and FASTER than shooting a show in a studio.
For both outdoor or big indoor event sports shoots you WILL need a telephoto lens to capture the ACTION but when it comes to capturing the Big Feel of an OUTDOOR place like Hawaii for example you want to use a WIDE angle lens on your camera!
Most prosumer video cameras with stock zoom lenses DO NOT go wide enough to get that DRAMITIC wide shot that simply captures more REALITY! The wider the better on your lens fixed focul or zoom all the way to 180 degree wide that produces the dramatically comical FISH EYE shots as seen on The Xcorps series!
If your video camera does not have a removable lens you cam always add with filter ring adapters a wide angle lens to the front of your existing lens.
On the Xcorps TV series we have been using the same FISH EYE cinema lens -( discovered by JSE in an Idaho pawn shop) – adapted for our video cameras to bring you the classic WIDE ANGLE shots to our audience! These scenes that include many exotic outdoor locations along with the hilarious close up FISH EYE shots of the Xcorps HOSTS reporting on the Action!
When using GoPro’s, Sony Action Cams or any of the POV cameras out on the market you can get this wide effect by simply moving the camera in CLOSE to the subject – 3 feet or minimum close focus.
Don’t use the SUPER wide lens all the time but it’s a great shot to include in your full show production. Many times we shoot scenes with 2-4 cameras set at different lens angles to enable multi-edit options.
